Rudy Giuliani picked the wrong issue to try to stage a comeback. More and more New Yorkers, including Republicans, are recognizing marriage equality as a civil rights issue. Mr. Giuliani should understand that excluding LGBT couples from marriage because it has traditionally been restricted to straight couples is not a legitimate argument, and he will find himself on the wrong side of history soon enough. For years, I have been a strong, vocal supporter of marriage equality, and unfortunately, New York continues to lag behind in providing equal rights for all. The time has come for New York to move forward. I commend Governor Paterson for his continued leadership in working to make marriage equality a reality for New Yorkers.
