Today, oral arguments commence in the California Supreme Court on the validity of Proposition 8 (the ballot measure banning gay marriage that was passed last November 4th). Prop 8 amended California State constitution so that only marriages between a man and a woman are legally recognized.
One of the issues be heard is the status of the many same-sex couples who were married before
November 4 of last year. As a long-time supporter of marriage equality, I
strongly opposed Prop 8, and I'm gratified to see that it is being challenged.
I'm also pleased that the California high court set an expedited schedule for this matter.
As I've pointed out before,New York State would be well advised to take action towards marriage equality. Bringing marriage equality to our state is not only the right thing to do, but it would boost business and tax revenue at a time when we really need it: According to calculations by the City Comptroller, marriage equality would boost the city economy by $142 million in the three years immediately following legalization.
But for now, the spotlight is on California. Stay tuned, and post your thoughts below.
