I have always supported gay marriage. I believe if people love each other and want to get married, they should be able to. I don't believe that government has a right to take away the rights of individuals. And voters shouldn’t be deciding this either. Civil rights are not to be doled out or erased by those in power, and they aren't something you can give or take away at the ballot box. They aren't up for grabs; these rights belong to everybody.
41 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled all bans against interracial marriage unconstitutional. At the time, if interracial marriage had been put to a vote, the majority would have been against it. This is no different. Prop 8 discriminates against part of the population and tells them they do not have the same rights as all other tax-paying citizens of this country. I believe it violates the Constitution and should be overturned.
This is not just about the discriminatory measure of Prop 8 and it's not only about other states that recently voted against marriage equality. It's about all Americans having equal rights under the law. Two neighboring states have recognized that it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex couples their legal rights. We must work together to make New York next. It's the right thing to do.
