UPDATE - 10/30/08 To give you a sense of available seats in your area, here's a breakdown:
There are 522 total programs [pdf] with vacancies.
Brooklyn has the most, with 231. Followed by Queens, with 115 programs, the Bronx with 82, Manhattan with 65, and Staten Island with 29 programs with vacancies. Please note: these vacancies are from 10/20/08 and some may have changed since then.
As reported in the Daily News today, over 5,000 slots still remain open for the city's free, universal pre-kindergarten program. The slots must be filled before this Friday, which is the deadline for the parents to register their kids.
Parents whose children are eligible for the universal pre-K program (kids that turn four by December 31st) should sign up ASAP by calling (888) 469-5999, or visiting the Department of Education website for a list of programs with open slots. Pre-K programs can be half day (two and a half hours, AM or PM) or full day (six hours and twenty minutes), and are offered all around the city.
Parents can also call our office at 212-669-7250 for help finding a Pre-K program for their child. Click here to read more about the Public Advocate’s previous work on city pre-kindergarten programs.
Remember: Sign up by this Friday!
